Why do I need a dentally made custom-fit mouthguard?
Most people are familiar with mouthguards and what they are designed to do. However not many people understand what the difference between a “boil and bite” mouthguard available from chemists and a dentally made, custom-fit mouthguard. So, what is the difference?
The Fit: A mouthguard is crafted to absorb and distribute the impact of a blow evenly across all your teeth and jaws. If it doesn't conform perfectly to your dental structure, air gaps can form, resulting in uneven force distribution. Research indicates that over-the-counter mouthguards can be as ineffective as wearing no mouthguard at all, or even more detrimental.
Thickness and layers: there is a lot more to a mouthguard than meets the eye. They must be at least 4mm thick. Ones designed for sports usually have several different layers.
Comfort and Performance: We will create a mouthguard tailored to the unique shape of your mouth. This ensures comfort while enabling clear speech and normal breathing. While it may feel thick and bulky, you should still be able to speak comfortably without it slipping. This design increases the likelihood that you'll wear your mouthguard when it’s needed the most.
Cost:
Obviously, there is a difference in cost between an over the counter “boil and bite” mouthguards and a custom made mouthguard. A Custom made mouthguard will cost you less than $200, and often your health insurance will cover a substantial amount of this. Mouthguards should be considered as a type of insurance, as a bad fall or blow to the mouth can result in a lifetime expense of dental treatment –No matter what alternatives we explore, nothing compares to the natural quality of your own teeth. Unfortunately, dental trauma frequently affects multiple teeth and can lead to jaw fractures or joint issues—damage that money sometimes cannot repair.
